I’m almost done with my degree and I hate it. Should I quit?

Mary A asked:

Hey,

I’m 23 years old. I’m about 6 credits shy of graduating with my Masters in Public Health degree. The more I deal with it the more I cannot stand it. I feel overwhelmed in the classes. I do not care for what I’m learning. I just missed the deadline for a final because I didn’t know how to do it at all. Graduation is coming up in a couple of months, though I’ll likely need a few more anyway to finish up the practicum. Should I tough it out or is this a sign that I should take a break and switch to something I enjoy more? I don’t want to come this far only to quit, but man I hate this and I’m starting to crack under the stress of it all. Help?

It sounds like a tough situation, but if I were you, in all honesty I would tough it out. That’s because you’re sooo close to the end, you might as well get a degree out of it. However, you probably will need to consider switching gears after graduation to see where you want to take your career after this. Figure out what it is that you hated about this area and what it is that you loved. It’s really too bad to be in a situation like this, but at least you learned it now before you’re deep into a career you hate as well.

Finish up and join the Peace Corps.

Not all that many people end up as a professional in whatever their college major was, anyways.

tough it out. quitting now would only show what a waste your time has been so far…but it would be worth it to persevere.
get the piece of paper and perhaps you can use it for something that you might like. A degree is a degree and many use it only for opening doors top good jobs, not necessarily what they directly studied for. I realize how tough this may seem but it’s time to rally and “git ‘er done”! I know that you will be glad later.

Finish. The degree is the goal. You invested time and money; get the reward. If you need a breather or want to do something different for the time being, that is fine. You don’t want to throw away all your work and money because right now you are fed up. No one is really happy at 23. You are struggling to pay bills, find your niche as an adult, while still trying to have fun.

Don’t give up 5 minutes before the miracle…it’s always darkest before the dawn…that’s what comes to mind when I contemplate your question. Your degree is only important as the symbol for the hard work and strong character you’ve been able to pull together for these last however-many years. Hang in there and grab your gold ring! You deserve at least that.

Aside from that - I’m with ya. I’m not crazy about my graduate program - I chose the wrong school - but in the end, I think I can turn this into something good.

Hey hold on there you’ve come way to far to quit now just tough it out and im sure theres other things in that field you’ll find intresting enough to work for and with after you graduate.
Atleast your only 6 credits away iv still got like 80 and i already wanna give up… but how would i pay back the loan if i dont stick it through and try so i can have a good money making job. So stick in there it’ll pay off one way or the other for you in the end. Good luck
