No medical background - MSN Nursing/Public Health?
elledriver80 asked:
I have a few questions about the joint degrees of MS Nursing/MA Public Health. Is it difficult to go into these academic environments with no prior medical experience? I already have a BA in Communications/Journalism. Is there many opportunties outside of “traditional nursing” with these degrees? My end goal is to do some type of research, but I’m not quite clear in what area. Am I going to right direction or not? Thank you.
**I want to do alot of reading, writing, and research not so much into the lab experiments aspect.
**Actually the program says they accept students from all major backgrounds, as long as they have an interest and a BA degree.

Well I would suggest to go get your MSN, and you can be a case manager, they usually deal with patient’s insurance, and mainly paper work, they’re are not “on the floor” working! Ya know what I mean?
They usually make around $90,000 to 100,000/Year. And usually these positions only require a BSN, but I say go for your MSN anyway! Good luck! =]]
Hope mine was the best answer…hint..hint!
You won’t have to worry about the lab work as you won’t have the necessary qualifications to do so. You could be involved in healthcare management or the marketing team for a hospital(that is with your background). Most research, I’m sure is conducted by health care professionals, doctors and specialists, only. I think marketing or PR would be great for you, as the healthcare field only grows they are going to need a voice to get their name(s) out. You’ll have to do research on healthcare trends, employment, laws, etc I’m sure. By the way, I’m not sure if you could do nursing, but Public Health you probably could or even Healthcare Management, there are some reputable schools online and campus that offers this degree.
The biggest thing I hate to say is experience and with yours being none, management or marketing would probably be the best probably! Good luck!!
I work at a university and assist with admissions for the nursing school. Most (if not all) MSN programs require that you already have your BSN degree and an RN license so more than likely you are not at all qualified for the MSN program. I don’t know about the Public Health one though.
