No medical background - MSN Nursing/Public Health?

elledriver80 asked:

I have a few questions about the joint degrees of MS Nursing/MA Public Health. Is it difficult to go into these academic environments with no prior medical experience? I already have a BA in Communications/Journalism. Is there many opportunties outside of “traditional nursing” with these degrees? My end goal is to do some type of research, but I’m not quite clear in what area. Am I going to right direction or not? Thank you.
**I want to do alot of reading, writing, and research not so much into the lab experiments aspect.
**Actually the program says they accept students from all major backgrounds, as long as they have an interest and a BA degree.

Considering Masters in Nursing or Masters in Public Health?

BabyRN asked:

I can’t believe I’m considering my next degree, I feel like I’ve been in school forever. I am a fairly new nurse, my interest is maternal child health, ob/gyn surgeries, babies, possibly NICU, L&D. I picture myself helping women and children, would love to work in a clinic setting also, really enjoy teenagers, std clinics, planned parenthood, WIC, that sort of thing.

I had considered the CNM (Nurse Midwife) but lately was pondering just the Masters in Nursing (MSN) or even Masters in Public Health (MPH). Given what I’ve said about my interests, does anyone in the medical field have any recommendations for me? Not sure which way to go, or which degree goes the farthest.?
Edited to add: Also have my Certified Lactation Educator (CLE) to augment my current job as a postpartum nurse and would like to be a Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) as well when I’ve gotten enough hours and taken the test, so that’s definitely an interest as well.
Also - not really interest in being one of the “chiefs” at the hospital. Enjoy working odd hours and three days a week, not thrilled about the traditional 9-5 job. Nursing instructor (esp clinicals in OB) is a possibility but I hear the pay isn’t very good.

Is it better for me to the online degree and the Msc at the same university? or can I do an online degree and aplly for the MSc at a different University? What other exams do foreign students need to do before entering into a Uni?

MSW/MPH Degree?

Psychology=Love asked:

I’m a college sophomore and I am really interested in getting a joint master’s degree in public health and social work after I complete my undergraduate work. Has anyone gotten this degree or is anyone in the process of getting it? If so, what are the best schools to go to? Also, what kind of job could I get/what is the pay scale (doesn’t matter that much to me…I just want to help people, but I have to be able to live off of it!). What should I be doing as an undergrad to help me prepare for this type of graduate program? Thanks!

Which major is easier? Public and community health or family science?

azkaban asked:

By easier I mean less stressful and less time consuming. What does one study in public health? I know public health has more science but I have already finished those.

I am sure that family science has more writing papers.

Any ideas? Let me know

Does your undergrad degree affect what you can study at grad school?

Jessica H asked:

I have been told that people talented in English have a slight edge over others because they can get MBAs. Now, I do not know how true that is but what does an English degree have to do with a masters in business? I am currently undecided about my undergraduate degree at Cal, but I am interested in eventually obtaining a joint masters degree in Public Health and Public Policy. They offer an undergraduate degree in Public Health but do I have to study Public Health in my undergraduate years in order to gain that joint masters? I have my reasons for not wanting to get an undergraduate degree in Public Health, seeing as it is not too useful and it’s more work than other paths to a masters. Help is much appreciated.
